Individual Trail

South Island / Shawnigan Lake

45 min driving from Downtown Victoria

The summit of Baldy Mountain in Shawnigan Lake rewards hikers with spectacular 360 degree views over Shawnigan Lake, the Saanich Peninsula and Gulf Islands. There are a few different trails to the summit, but for this map we took the easiest route - the main roadway which starts at the RED gate on Strathcona Heights Road (not the yellow gate further down the road). The road/trail is wide and consists of small to medium sized rocks. There is enough elevation gain to get your heart pumping, but as there's no roots or scrambling required, it's not too technically challenging. I did bring my walking poles though, as it helped me with my footing on the loose rocks, particularly when descending. There are some trails that go off of the main road which allow some more invigorating ascents, but the view at the top is the same no matter how you get there, so we took it easy. Just before you arrive at the summit, there is a short walk off the main road to take in the best views over Shawnigan Lake. When you rejoin the road it is a short walk to the summit and an incredible view over the ocean to the Saanich Peninsula and Gulf Islands.

GPS Notes
Most often when viewing our maps, trails marked in Green or Blue have been human-verified by our volunteers. A route in purple indicates an overgrown trail or a bushwhack. Otherwise, the tracks may have been satellite traced or imported from third party sources. While we strongly believe our GPS are accurate, please be aware that no logging system is perfect and to be aware of potential errors.
